The Chiawana Riverhawks didn’t just win the Mid-Columbia Conference in 2025 — they dominated it.
With a 9-0 MCC record (14-2-1 overall), Chiawana outscored league opponents 44–0, completing an undefeated conference slate without conceding a single goal. It’s a feat never before achieved in program history — and a testament to the senior class that built a defensive dynasty.
“Our defensive unit has been outstanding this season allowing zero goals in conference play, which is a new school record,” said head coach Sam Nuñez. “It’s been one of our program’s biggest strengths for the past four years, and it’s fitting that this senior class closed that chapter with such an impressive accomplishment.”
Led by senior captain and Division I commit Kalina Barbosa, the Riverhawks’ back line became the gold standard of the Mid-Columbia. The University of Idaho-bound center back was, in Nuñez’s words, “in a different class compared to the rest of the league,” anchoring a group that shut out every conference foe.
“Kalina’s been the anchor of our defense and a true leader on and off the field,” Nuñez said. “Alongside her, junior Amaya Garcia-Thompson has shown incredible composure and maturity at center back, forming a rock-solid partnership that’s been tough for teams to break down.”
Behind them, senior goalkeeper Addie Tensmeyer, a four-year starter and captain, continued to shine as the Riverhawks’ vocal leader. On the outside, Addie Bunger and Macey Smith provided the pace and defensive reliability that allowed Chiawana to press high while staying organized. When Smith suffered an injury late in the year, Evie Espindola was called up from JV and stepped in with confidence and maturity.
The back four’s success was reinforced by sophomores Arissa Upton and Nicole Mills, whose disciplined play as holding midfielders helped shield the defense and transition the attack.
“They’ve made tremendous strides this year,” Nuñez said. “It’s been a complete team effort led by seniors Kalina and Addie, and this group has set a new standard for what it means to defend as a team at Chiawana.”
Even while pitching shutouts, the Riverhawks lit up scoreboards — 44 goals in nine conference games.
Senior forward Mylie Anderson capped her stellar career with 24 goals and 12 assists, pacing the MCC in both categories. Sophomore sister Baylie Anderson added 7 goals and 8 assists, and junior Sawyer Chubb contributed 8 goals and 10 assists. From the back, Barbosa’s 5 goals and 2 assists underscored her two-way dominance.
“When we’re scoring, Maylie’s almost always involved,” Nuñez said. “But what’s really impressed me is how she’s embraced being a playmaker too. If defenses key on her, she creates for others.”
For Nuñez — a Chiawana alum who once wore the Riverhawk blue himself — this year’s title represents the culmination of years of consistent culture-building grounded in the program’s core values: Synergy, Ownership, Attitude, and Respect.
“They’ve embodied everything we talk about with SOAR,” he said. “That’s the Riverhawk way.”
Next Up: District Play Begins
