JACKSONVILLE — As Jaxon Smith-Njigba ran past the Jacksonville secondary, Sam Darnold unleashed a perfect deep ball that hit him in stride, allowing the Seattle Seahawks’ third-year receiver to glide into the end zone untouched for a 61-yard touchdown.
In a defensive slugfest where points were at a premium, that second-quarter strike proved to be the turning point in Seattle’s 20–12 victory. It also served as yet another reminder of how electric the Darnold–Smith-Njigba connection has become in the 2025 NFL season.
Smith-Njigba and Darnold Connect for Game-Changing 61-Yard Touchdown
Smith-Njigba finished the day with a season-best 162 yards on eight receptions, marking the second-highest total of his career. Darnold went 16 for 27 for 295 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers, posting a 121.7 passer rating — his fourth straight game above 110.
With Sunday’s 61-yard strike, Darnold and Smith-Njigba have now connected on a deep pass of 36 yards or longer in every game this season.
“It’s up in the air in the perfect spot,” Smith-Njigba said. “He allows me to adjust and make a play. We just keep connecting.”
Offensive Consistency Fuels Seahawks’ 20-12 Victory
Seattle’s balanced offensive effort and mistake-free play made the difference. Darnold’s accuracy, paired with steady protection from the offensive line, helped neutralize Jacksonville’s opportunistic defense — a unit that had forced 14 turnovers through five games.
“Taking care of the football was the emphasis,” Darnold said. “Jacksonville’s great at forcing mistakes, but we stayed disciplined.”
Smith-Njigba Emerging as NFL’s Top Receiver
Through six games, Smith-Njigba has now eclipsed 100 receiving yards four times, with his “worst” outing still an impressive 79-yard performance. With 696 yards total, he now leads the NFL in receiving yards, surpassing Rams standout Puka Nacua.
“His consistency has been amazing,” Darnold said. “He works every day with the same energy and standard — that’s what makes him elite.”
Cooper Kupp and Smith-Njigba Form Dynamic Duo
When the Seahawks signed Cooper Kupp in free agency, many questioned how he and Smith-Njigba would coexist. Both had thrived from the slot in their careers, but the duo has quickly silenced skeptics. Kupp delivered another key contribution Sunday — a 29-yard catch-and-run followed by an 11-yard touchdown.
Together, they’ve become one of the most dangerous receiving tandems in the league, giving Seattle multiple top-tier options on any down.
Breaking the “Slot Receiver” Label
Against the Jaguars, Smith-Njigba lined up out wide on a career-high 88.5% of his routes, catching seven of 11 targets for 163 yards. His one reception from the slot went for a short loss — a testament to how much he’s evolved beyond his early-career label.
Head coach Mike Macdonald praised the growth:
“They wrongfully pegged him as a slot guy. He’s just a great receiver, period.”
Darnold’s Leadership and Efficiency Shine Through
In his first season leading Seattle’s offense, Sam Darnold has shown poise, precision, and chemistry with his playmakers. His ability to extend plays and protect the football has fueled the Seahawks’ offensive resurgence.
Darnold’s deep accuracy — including completions of 61 yards to Smith-Njigba, 61 yards to tight end AJ Barner, and 29 yards to Kupp — has turned Seattle into one of the league’s most explosive passing attacks.
Seahawks Stay Hot as Playoff Buzz Builds
With the win, Seattle improves to 5–1 and continues to assert itself as a top NFC contender. Smith-Njigba is on pace for an all-time receiving season, while Darnold is playing the most efficient football of his career.
As Cooper Kupp noted, Smith-Njigba’s production is no accident:
“To win when defenses know you’re the target — that’s special. He’s a complete receiver and a great teammate.”
The 2025 Seahawks are proving week after week that this offense, built on rhythm, balance, and precision, can contend with anyone in the league.
