The Tri-City Dust Devils (7-2 2H, 37-38) made history north of the border this past week, winning a tightly contested six-game series over the Vancouver Canadians (3-5 2H, 40-34) — their first series win in British Columbia since 2019. A combination of elite pitching, well-timed offense, and late-game execution propelled Tri-City to four wins in the set, placing them in a tie for first in the Northwest League second-half standings.
Game 1: Canadians Halt Dust Devils’ Streak
Tri-City opened the series with a 6–3 loss, ending a six-game winning streak. Ryan Johnson delivered five shutout innings before Vancouver turned the tide with two home runs in the sixth. Despite a game-tying rally fueled by a solo blast from Randy De Jesus and a sacrifice fly by David Calabrese, the Canadians pulled ahead for good in the seventh.
Game 2: Costeiu and Defense Seal Bounce-Back Win
Starter Ryan Costeiu gave the Dust Devils their longest start of the year on Wednesday, tossing 7.1 innings en route to a 5–4 victory. The offense provided just enough support, with timely hits and a late defensive stand holding off a Vancouver comeback to even the series at one game apiece.
Game 3: Rained Out in Vancouver
Thursday’s contest was postponed due to steady rain at Rogers Field at Nat Bailey Stadium. The game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Game 4: Placencia’s Clutch Hit Sparks Comeback Win
Friday’s game saw Tri-City trailing 2–1 with two outs in the ninth. That’s when Adrian Placencia came through with a two-run double to right, flipping the script in a 3–2 comeback win. Jake Smith earned the win with three perfect innings of relief.
Game 5: Dust Devils Split Saturday Doubleheader
In Saturday’s twin bill, Vancouver took Game 1, 4–2, taking advantage of early opportunities. Ryan Nicholson and David Calabrese each drove in a run for Tri-City, but it wasn’t enough.
Game 2, however, swung back to the Dust Devils in extras. Alexander Ramirez homered in the first inning, and after the Canadians tied it, Matt Coutney scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the eighth. Max Gieg locked down the save in a 4–3 win.
Game 6: Johnson’s Masterpiece and a Defensive Gem Clinch Series
The series finale Sunday was a pitcher’s duel. Ryan Johnson delivered his third consecutive seven-inning outing — this one a shutout gem — striking out eight and retiring the final 11 batters he faced. In the sixth, Calabrese and Nicholson executed a double steal before De Jesus lofted a sacrifice fly deep enough to center to bring in the game’s only run.
The Dust Devils bullpen preserved the 1–0 lead with authority. Leonard Garcia tossed a perfect eighth, and Dylan Phillips worked through trouble in the ninth. With the bases loaded and one out, Arol Vera and Adrian Placencia turned a slick 6-4-3 double play to end the game and secure both the shutout and the series win.
