It was a weekend of high emotions and intense competition at Tropicana Field as the Seattle Mariners closed out the unofficial first half of the season against the American League-leading Tampa Bay Rays. Facing a tough five-game losing streak and an initially quiet offense, Seattle showed tremendous resilience. While the first two games of the series got away from them during historic weekend celebrations in St. Petersburg, a massive Sunday breakout proved exactly what this team is capable of as they head into the All-Star break.

Weekend Game Breakdowns
âšľ Game 1: Rays 7, Mariners 2
Friday night belonged to newly named, first-time All-Star Nick Martinez, who anchored a dominant pitching performance for Tampa Bay hours after making the roster. The Rays’ offense backed him up with a heavy home run barrage. Seattle struggled to find an offensive rhythm against Martinez’s precision, managing just two runs on five hits across the entire evening.
âšľ Game 2: Rays 6, Mariners 1
Saturday afternoon at the Trop was charged with emotion as the host team celebrated “Longo’s Legacy Weekend,” inducting franchise icon Evan Longoria into their Hall of Fame. Spurred on by a packed, energetic crowd, the Rays kept the pressure high. The Mariners’ offense remained largely frozen, dropping a 6-1 decision and extending their losing streak to five games.
âšľ Game 3: Mariners 8, Rays 2
The Mariners desperately needed a win on Sunday, and they got it in dramatic fashion. Starting pitcher Emerson Hancock was forced out of the game in the second inning after taking a sharp 107.2 mph comebacker directly off his pitching hand. Fortunately, X-rays came back negative, revealing only a severe bruise on his middle finger.
With Hancock sidelined, Seattle’s bullpen put on an absolute clinic, throwing 7.1 brilliant relief innings and holding the league’s best offense to just two runs.
Meanwhile, the bats finally woke up:
-
Cole Young broke a painful 0-for-27 team drought with runners in scoring position (RISP) by hitting a crucial second-inning single to load the bases.
-
J.P. Crawford followed up with a clutch two-run double, finishing the day with three RBIs.
-
Former Rays star Randy Arozarena put the exclamation mark on the victory, flashing a wide smile toward his old dugout as he launched a towering three-run home run into the right-field seats in the fourth inning.

🌴 Heading into the Break: The Mariners will use the four-day All-Star break to reset, recover, and allow key pieces like Emerson Hancock and outfielder Julio RodrĂguez time to heal. With the bullpen locked in and the situational hitting finally breaking through, Seattle is well-positioned to protect their AL West lead when the second-half stretch begins.
